What kind of a person steps away from their own comfortable, safe, loving and busy life to go and help others in need?
We all saw the answer to that question during the unfathomable events on 9-11.
We are all seeing that answer now as we see video and photos from Haiti and read hurried words typed onto blog posts, twitter accounts and e-mails.
As I am making dinner for my family right now I wonder about what the people of Haiti, and those who are serving the people of Haiti are having for dinner tonight. What are the fears, worries, labors and pains that they have endured today?
Those who serve others, who set themselves and their lives aside, in the service of others, leave me intensely thankful.
I wonder how many times today they have heard the words, “thank you” in the voices of those they have served. Interestingly, people who serve don’t do it to receive those thank yous – they do it because they are compelled.
Do you serve those around you, right there…in your home…in the same selfless way?
Heavenly Father, I am thankful for those special souls you have placed on this earth who you have given the ability and the compulsion to serve others. May you bless them, and those they are serving, and those they have left behind … who are no doubt missing the sweetness of their presence.
