So my Senior in High School asked me…”Mom, how can people say America was not founded on a belief in God when this is what I just read?”
She was doing some research on the first Thanksgiving congressional resolution and the subsequent federal Thanksgiving proclamation issued by President George Washington, which said:
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor…Now, therefore, I do appoint Thursday the 26th day of November 1789 … that we may all unite to render unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection.
Needless to say we had a great conversation where she shared with me what she was learning in school and I shared with her what I had learned as I was studying law in college.
I so enjoy meaningful conversations, and higher learning of the real facts with my teens!
